There are two main approaches to tokenizing stocks:
1. Asset-Backed Tokens (Wrapped Stocks)
Real shares are held by a licensed custodian.
Tokens are issued 1:1 onchain.
Example: Backed Finance (Switzerland) manages ~$91.5M across 64 tokenized stocks like $bAAPL and $bTSLA.
These tokens are fully backed and tradable on Ethereum and Solana.
2. Synthetic Stock Tokens
No real shares held — just price exposure.
Backed by collateral and smart contracts.
Example: Mirror Protocol (Terra) collapsed when its stablecoin lost its peg.
Synthetix (Ethereum) offers a more cautious model, but adoption remains limited.
